How to Create a Script for a Podcast Trailer!

You have a podcast underway? AY! So proud of you. Now you need a little 30-60 second elevator speech convincing the listeners to stay with you, and keep listening to your podcast. No pressure, but this trailer will be the fate between listeners clicking episode one, or clicking on someone else's trailer. Let's make sure its the former.

script for listeners

You can absolutely make a video for your trailer, I did, I love videos. For your visual viewers this is way better than a blank screen, far far more engaging. Here is where you can mess up though. RELYING on the visuals to relay information is a no no in podcasting. You see, a lot of people are simply listeners, like listening to your podcast on the way back home from work. When you script, make sure you're thinking about these listeners. Get your points across without using visuals.

Lead with a hook

Like any great writing, you need to understand attention spans. It's even worse when a lot of these listeners could be driving and have a half second to click on something before their light turns green. Your first one to two sentences need to be engaging. An amazing story, a shocking sentence, make them laugh - keep their attention. You could go on to say that each sentence is a pitch to the listener to listen to the next one, however the beginning is the most important. Make them want to finish listening and understanding the trailer.

Describe the show

Now get in there, in under 60 seconds describe what they can expect from listening to your podcast. What is the goal? What type of episodes will you be doing? When will you upload? Also, don't be boring. Put some spice on your explanations of your episodes!

Why is yours better

There is a high probability there are podcasts similar to yours, and those listening to your trailer right now are probably trying to find the best of these similar podcasts. Sell yourself, why is your podcast better than the others that exist? Have you been doing it longer, are you funnier, do you have more connections, what is it that makes yours better than the others that exist

Overall

This is your pitch to get the listener to keep watching your podcast. Make sure the visuals are good for the people watching on the computer (if your podcast is set up that way, you can totally be an audio only podcast), but be sure not to RELY on visuals if you choose to use them. Get their attention immediately, they're most likely scrolling through podcasts trying to find one to listen to. Stop them. Don't let them click on the next trailer. Catch their attention and make them want to listen. Now that you have their attention, describe what they can expect from listening to your podcast, spiced up a little bit of course. And finally, let them know why you are better than the other podcasts that are similar to yours. You now have one beautiful trailer.
