Family/Friends Activity: Friendlympics

Updated: Aug 18, 2021

This is a great idea that me and my girlfriend actually created this year, and plan on doing annually. Now sit tight because here is a little backstory.

I LOVE Fall, and I LOVE Winter. I love setting up for Halloween, getting pumpkin spice lattes, putting on my checkered button ups, turning on the fire, drinking hot chocolate. It's a very festive 6 months. But Summer and Spring? I mean there is Easter, but it's not that festive. There's no Holliday, no certain thing to look forward to every year. Well, there wasn't. Me and my girlfriend agreed on this problem and decided to MAKE something festive. What is something we could only do in Summer? Outdoor activities. Enter the Friendlympics.

What is the Friendlympics?

Take the Olympics and replace the ripped superstars with less coordinated or beautiful people. This activity does take planning and scheduling on many people's part, but pulling it off is a great experience.

How to do it?

Make a collage of however many different activities you want: ping-pong, bowling, kickball, wiffleball, a video game, tennis, billiards, racing, or even silly games like three-legged-races.

Once your line up of activities is complete, create the tiers. We did two tiers, 16 and under and 16 and up. The layout is the same, except kids didn't pay to enter. The adults paid $5 to enter, and first second and third place at the end split the pot with first place getting 50% of the pot, second place getting 33% of the pot and third place getting 17%.

How we did the points were for the individual, not the team. If you won a solo game, like solo tennis, you got a point. If your team won kickball, every individual got a point. So the more YOU win, the more INDIVIDUAL points you get.

Instead of money you could do prizes or trophies, but my family sure does like to bet their money with each other.

Get Festive

Doing this every year will make it something to look forward to! I had an idea of changing the theme every year, so outfits will be Greek or something. Just thought different themes would be cool.

We also plan on an opening ceremony just to be funny. The winner of last years games will run a torch, or bring THE single trophy running it up to a pedestal for a new years winner.

The point of this is to have fun, to have something to look forward to during summer and get excited about. And this is a great idea for it.
